YouTube Bids Farewell to YouTube Stories


On June 26, 2023, YouTube will be removing the YouTube Stories feature. This feature allowed creators with at least 10,000 subscribers to create temporary compilations of short videos that appeared on their subscribers' home pages. YouTube's decision to remove YouTube Stories is driven by a desire to prioritize its more popular recent features, such as YouTube Shorts and Community posts. This strategic decision ultimately benefits YouTube users, as it demonstrates the company's commitment to investing in features that people actively utilize.

YouTube Stories initially started rolling out to select creators in 2018 and was officially launched in 2019 as YouTube's response to Instagram's Stories feature. However, YouTube Stories failed to gain significant traction, especially when compared to other features.

According to YouTube, the average user only watched less than 10 seconds of a YouTube Story. This lack of engagement can be attributed to the limited discoverability of YouTube Stories compared to features like YouTube Shorts and Community posts. 

YouTube Shorts, introduced in 2020, is a short-form video feature similar to TikTok and has rapidly become one of YouTube's most popular offerings, boasting over 1 billion monthly active users.
Community posts, launched in 2021, is another well-received feature that enables creators to share text, images, and videos directly with their subscribers, fostering a stronger connection with their audience.
